San Francisco’s avant-garde art pop project please don’t eat me has unveiled their latest single, “Wade,” released on December 4, 2024. The track is a deeply introspective exploration of personal and environmental uncertainty, blending emotive piano and ethereal production to create a hauntingly beautiful listening experience.
Ellie Stokes, the creative force behind please don’t eat me, reveals that “Wade” originated nearly a decade ago as one of her first piano compositions. It was crafted as a means of processing feelings of disconnection and helplessness in a world increasingly impacted by climate change.
Reflecting on its enduring relevance, Stokes shares, “I feel like, especially this year, a lot of us are experiencing a similar question of where we fit into this evolving landscape, what can we do? Though the song is a good nine years old for me, I feel like the message still stands and is even more pertinent today.”
The production, handled by Grammy-nominated producer Jim Greer, elevates the song with an eerie and atmospheric soundscape. Greer’s intricate layers of reversed vocals and haunting textures are complemented by a poignant saxophone solo from the legendary Angelo Moore of Fishbone, a collaboration that Stokes calls “a total dream come true.”
Accompanying the release is a music video repurposing an animation by Stokes’ friend Eye Tea, originally created for the song’s earlier demo. The visuals seamlessly align with the track’s emotional core, offering a fresh perspective on its meaning nearly a decade later.
“Wade” serves as a prelude to the self-titled debut EP please don’t eat me, set to release on December 13. The five-track collection promises a fusion of existential lyricism, whimsical yet profound themes, and eclectic production. Stokes describes the EP as “existentialism in a very fun and lighthearted way,” an offering that balances introspection with vibrant sonic experimentation.
Listeners can look forward to this unique blend of artful storytelling and boundary-pushing production, making please don’t eat me an emerging name to watch in the indie and art pop scene.
