Leeds-based indie rock, American artist The Hope The Fear, also known as Fletcher, has released his new single “Told You So”, a reflective anthem that blends elements of indi folk and pop with a hint of country.
The track opens with a mellow guitar, gradually joined by drums, with both instruments, which gives it a strong steady rhythm. While it’s rooted in indie folk/ pop, the chorus brings in guitar lines that recall a country genre vibe, adding an interesting twist to the sound.
The song’s lyrics are deeply reflective, focusing on the journey of chasing dreams and the realisation that it’s not always about where you end up, but what you learn along the way.
Alex explains that “Told You So is an anti-love letter to my younger self. It’s about those moments of doubt—questioning whether it was worth it, but also about the excitement of throwing yourself into something you really care about. It’s a bit messy, but that’s the point—looking back, there are things I might have changed, but I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything.”
The track was recorded at The Green Room studio, produced by Tim Malkin, and mixed by Danny Marland. The production highlights the emotions portrayed in Fletcher’s lyrics while maintaining a clear and sharp tone.
The song “Told You So” is the first of several that will be released in the upcoming year. Following Fletcher’s previous hit, “You Should Know”, it further establishes his artistic reputation in the music world. BBC Introducing Leeds and Sheffield are currently supporting the song, and Fletcher has performed on stages with Ida Mae and Bailen.
The Hope The Fear project started in 2021 during the lockdown, when Fletcher reflected on his creative journey. To him the concept had existed for some time, and it truly came to life during the pandemic time. With ample time to think, Fletcher wrote his first songs, using music as a way to understand and share his feelings, hoping it would resonate with others.
