Critically acclaimed folk-pop singer-songwriter Lauren Minear shares her deeply touching new single, “Protect You,” released on January 31, 2025. Music has served and continues to be an outlet for Minear in storytelling and healing, using her lyrics and soulful voice.
This song showcases a heart-wrenching look at the devastating presence of gun violence, triggered personally by the tragic Covenant School shooting that happened just one mile from where Minear grew up in Nashville, Tennessee.
“Protect You” follows Minear’s signature ability to translate profound emotion into powerful, cinematic melodies. The song was written right on the heels of the March 27th, 2023 shooting and it shows some raw grief and fear amongst parents across the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the song’s inspiration, Minear says, “Like so many parents, I was overwhelmed with grief and fear getting my two boys ready for school that morning. It got even more personal when I saw press photos of places I knew from my childhood. I knew I had to write this song.”
It was produced by Dan Weeks at London’s WWW Studios, mixed by John Foyle, and mastered by Svante Forsback in Finland. A more acoustic rendition, produced by Minear’s longtime collaborator Dan Barracuda, is recorded in Brooklyn and offers up an intimate deliverance of such a powerful message.
Critical acclaim has been steady to date for Minear’s latest album, entitled Chasing Daylight; Earmilk describes it as “a colorful exploration of visibility and self-discovery.” With over 355,000 streams, 1.2 million views, and many songwriting accolades,
including recognition from the International Songwriting Competition and the Unsigned-Only Competition, Minear continues to build upon her sturdy reputation as a standout voice in the modern folk-pop world.
With “Protect You”, Lauren Minear proves once again that music can be an active medium for the causes of both advocacy and change, offering comfort in times of tragedy as much as a call to action.
