Tampa Bay-based hip-hop artist Jean~Baptiste is back with “What Is Love”, a track that unpacks love in all its forms; the highs, the heartbreak, and everything in between. Known for his introspective storytelling, he blends classic and modern hip-hop influences, creating something that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
Originally from Worcester, Massachusetts, Jean Baptiste grew up inspired by Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, and later artists like J. Cole, Mac Miller, and Kendrick Lamar. Music wasn’t always in the plan, though.
After college, he moved to Saint Petersburg, Florida, focused on a more stable career. But after a series of tough moments, he found himself turning back to music, writing, recording, and eventually performing.
On “What Is Love ”, he takes listeners through the rush of love, the way it changes your whole perspective before flipping the mood as reality sets in. Love isn’t just about the good moments; it’s also about loss, and how even when it fades, its impact lingers.
Joining him on the track is Kelsea Martinez, a singer-songwriter with a poetic touch, influenced by Biggie Smalls, Lauryn Hill, and J. Cole. Her smooth vocals add depth to the song, balancing Jean Baptiste’s introspective bars with melodies that feel both nostalgic and fresh.
With its dreamy production and raw lyricism, “What Is Love” is easy to vibe with but hard to forget. At its core, it’s about more than just relationships, it’s about understanding love itself, and how before you can really give it, you gotta define it for yourself.
