In the current climate of the world, clever artists like Oddisee thrive. It gives someone as socially aware as he is, even more to say. The latest from the Washington emcee is “Requiem” featuring Phonte, a thoughtful new cut off the upcoming compilation album Persona from Mello Music Group, the thriving independent Hip Hop label that Oddisee produces, raps and consults for.
The label consistently releases intelligent and conscious records, and on this one, Phonte kicks things off convinced that the tribulations of recent times would even “make a cyborg break out in tears“, and that it’s just too much to take in sometimes, revealing “I’m runnin’ outta shit to feel“. Oddisee sums up the current volatile times sharply: “you judge me by the way I dress, my name and sex and think that I’m on the way to display a vest”. He ends things on an encouraging and inspiring note, that he’s “found a better way“. It’s his lead we should all be following sooner rather than later.
