It seems strange to call Stornoway ‘folk veterans’, but the band have been around for a decade now with two highly acclaimed records to their name in 2010’s Beachcomber Windowsill and 2012’s Tales From Terra Firma. It is certainly safe to regard them as graduates of the indie-folk revival, alongside fellow tweed stars such as Mumford and Sons. But has their latest offering moved on from the ‘ho-down’ inspired acoustic music which has itself slowly gone back into hibernation?
The Oxford band have specialized in producing exactly the sort of sound to accompany a night time drive on a quiet road or a lonely hike through the wilderness. Following suit with their latest release, “The Road You Didn’t Take” is built out of Bill Briggs’s trademark soft vocals and the Oxford band’s gentle percussion and tranquil guitar licks. In short, there seems to be no new direction especially, but with Briggs’s voice echoing louder, in what sounds like a more orchestral arrangement, Stornoway seem like they’re ready to take on bigger things.
