This weekend’s winners at the US box office are the female film for females Pitch Perfect 2 raking in a rather stunning $70 million in its opening weekend and the critically adored Mad Max: Fury Road hurtling towards an impressive $44 million.
It’s not much of a surprise seeing the success of these two films, Pitch Perfect 2 directed by Elizabeth Banks has a very strong fan base that will surely love what Banks has provided them via the sequel to the 2012 surprise hit and Mad Max has been so lauded in the press that everyone who has any interest in movies will be on their way to see if it lives up to astronomical hype.
Mad Max fared slightly better than Pitch Perfect 2 in the global marketplace, raking in a very nice $109 million, already obliterating (to no surprise) the previous three in the franchise. The Anna Kendrick lead project collected a slightly smaller $108 million, nearly catching the original’s total in one weekend.
In other more Marvel filled news, Avengers: Age of Ultron is still wheeling in the cash by the barrel full, adding another cool $38 million (the 5th highest third weekend of all time) to its domestic haul. The Avengers extravaganza is fairing even better overseas, breaking all kinds of records in China to bring in $156 million in its first six days, proving once again that the country isn’t a million miles off in catching the US as the most lucrative movie market; it’s going to happen sooner or later.
That very nice sum brings the Disney blockbusters worldwide total to $1.142 billion, making it the 8th highest grossing movie of all time. It might not catch the original Avengers flick at $1.5 billion but it’s definitely on its way to something around $1.4 billion, unless China continues to go gang busters for it which might see it eke even closer to its predecessor.
