After having phenomenal success at the US box office, where it has grossed $135 million and been number one for three weeks in a row, Straight Outta Compton has gone straight to the top of the UK box office. The NWA biopic grossed £2.8 million over the weekend – not exactly a replica of its US success, but still head and shoulders above the rest of the chart, with Inside Out being the only other film to have broken the £1 million barrier this week.
Other major new releases this week had dismal openings, including Hitman: Agent 47 with £961,411 (still enough to make it number 3 on a slow week), whilst Zac Efron‘s DJ movie We Are Your Friends missed out on the top ten altogether, crashing and burning in thirteenth place with £260,715.
Next weekend sees a plethora of new releases in the UK, including Transporter: Refuelled, Me & Earl & The Dying Girl, Ricki & The Flash, No Escape and American Ultra – all but one of which have been box office disappointments in the US, ensuring next week is going to be a slow one for UK cinemagoers.
