Director Guillermo Del Toro‘s 2013 monsters vs robots blockbuster Pacific Rim is a film that became famous for not doing very well in America, but became a hit after unexpectedly becoming one of the biggest box office hits of all time in China. However, the film still has a problematic reputation as a “bubble movie”- a film that only just made back it’s budget and advertising costs, with limited profit. Yes, Pacific Rim had a $411 million take worldwide- but against a production budget of $190 million and a similarly costly marketing budget, the $411 million looks less impressive.
Luckily for those of us who loved Pacific Rim, a sequel was announced and filming was expected to start in Toronto this November. However, Latino Review has just reported that filming is delayed until 2016, putting the planned August 2017 release date up in the air; a technically ambitious film of this scope needs plenty of time in post-production to complete special effects, which a year alone is unlikely to do. For those of us still craving our next Del Toro fix, his next film Crimson Peak is released on October 16.
