Last night (January 26), Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had a great evening receiving Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Rap Song (“Thrift Shop”) and Best Rap Album (The Heist), however the social networks were all going crazy at especially his Best Rap Album win over the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, Kanye West and Drake.
Only a few weeks ago, the Grammy voting committee were debating about whether or not Macklemore and Ryan Lewis should even be included in the Rap categories; however after the decision was overturned to include Macklemore, we all knew he would win because of his commercial sales and mainstream popularity. In response to the Twitter backlash against his Best Rap Album win, Macklemore shared a text which he sent to Kendrick Lamar on his Instagram page.
He said in the text: “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was going to say that during the speech. Then the music started playing and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and a friend. Much love“.
He also included a caption which read:
“My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys“
