Former Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante has released several songs on SoundCloud and on BandCamp for free. The experimental-sounding electronic pieces sound nothing like his mainstream creations of old, and Frusciante fully acknowledges this.
His philosophy seems to be that artists should release music because they like it, not for profit. On his website, he comments: “[I]t is my conviction that music should always be made because one loves music, regardless of whether one plans on selling it or not.”
In regards to his now-unconventional style, he is grateful to “still have an audience” and proceeds to ponder the idea of giving people what they want, namely: how can people know what they want before they have heard it?
