Pop artist Alesha Dixon, now BGT judge, has joined the likes of Professor Green and Will Young in the fight against China’s annual Yulin dog meat festival. The event takes place on June 21 and the stars have compiled a 2-minute video with their beloved pets, to urge organisers to stop the event. It is thought that around 10 – 20 million dogs and cats are killed brutally each year in China.
Most of these animals are stolen from the streets, still wearing their collars and bearing owner names, and are usually beaten to death in front of one another. The trade, however, is gaining opposition as most in China refrain from eating such meat but the #StopYulin campaign is by far the biggest campaign of its kind. The event only started in 2010 and was done for commercial rather than cultural reasons. The festival was instead set up for local business sales and to attract further tourism to the area.
It’s not the first time that Alesha has been mobile in showing her feelings on sensitive issues. She has written and performed a Weight Watchers song to prevent obesity and has long supported the fight against Cancer campaign. Let’s hope that the celebrities’ efforts are effective enough to stop the barbaric event from ever taking place again.
You can support the #StopYulin campaign in these two simple ways: Sign and share the #StopYulinpetition here or text WOOF03 £3 (or any other amount) to 70070 to donate to help HSI save dogs.
