23 year-old rising star Alessia Cara has released her new single “Rooting For You”, a second taste of her upcoming EP This Summer.
Cara is a Canadian singer, songwriter and instrumentalism, who started her music career by producing acoustic covers until her talented vocals and producing skills came to EP Entertainment and Def Jam Recordings’ notice and offered a contract to Cara in 2014.
Cara released her debut single “Here” in 2015, which achieved the number 19 position on the Canadian Hot 100 chart and was top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and her debut album Know-It-All also reached number 8 and 9 on the Canadian Albums Charts and Billboard 200 chart respectively. However, the R&B star rose to the fame in 2017, when she teamed up with DJ and producer Zedd to create “Stay”.
Following her success with her previous work, the 2018 Grammy winner announced she will be launching her next EP on September 6. Cara already teased the break-up angle of the EP with “Ready” last month and now she just revealed a second track.
On “Rooting For You”, Cara shares her disappointment about how bad and “cold” her summer romance gets. Starting off slow, some simple acoustic guitar chords accompany Cara’s melodic voice as she portrays the sad story.
When the chorus starts, a bouncy, funky synth-and-drum combo kicks in and shakes the song chilled vibes, reinforcing Cara’s statement until the end. “I was like, damn/Why you gotta be so cold in the summertime/Summertime/ I was really rooting for you,” she repeats all through the song, sharing her tiredness and frustration over his “burning bridges”.
