Alt-Pop Artist Mae Stephens Unveils Viral TikTok Single ‘If We Ever Broke Up’

This year, if you opened TikTok even for the tiniest amount of time, you’ll probably have heard “If We Ever Broke Up“, the contagious, attitude-filled alt-pop song taking over the app. The 19-year-old Kettering artist who wrote it, Mae Stephens, has had a barrage of requests to make the song fully available, and it is finally here!

Since Mae originally uploaded a preview of the song on New Year’s Eve, the big global viral hit has amassed over 10 million TikTok views, and interest in the song is only growing. With over 200k weekly listeners tuning into her Spotify to hear her previously released music as well, it’s clear that this is not a one-time occurrence.

With its no-nonsense approach and seductive synth melodies, “If We Ever Broke Up” is winning over fans at an astounding rate and is the ideal way to say goodbye to an ex.

Speaking about the track, Mae says, “It was written from the perspective of if I was still with my ex-boyfriend and, if I had the attitude and the experience that I do now when I was 16, I would have done all these things and told his dad what he did“.

She goes on to add that, “I think deep down everyone wants to tell their crappy ex’s dad what they did. I’ve read a lot of comments from people saying that this song helped them through their break-up because it gave them that boss energy!

Mae was seeking refuge and sanctuary in her music-making between working shifts at her neighbourhood Asda when she woke up on New Year’s Day to find her song becoming viral online. She had been a songwriter since she was 12 years old, using music to help her get through the challenges of adolescence by expressing her emotions in powerful songs on her grandmother’s antique piano.
