Dot., a singer-songwriter with a base in Bangalore (real name Aditi Saigal), has released a new single tirled “Indigo” available through Welsh label The Playbook.
With one foot firmly planted in the warmth of an ethereal indie-pop future and the other solidly in the past, the Indian artist’s return to music is a step forward for her.
The inspiration for “Indigo,” an independent song with pop and folk tones, came from a fantasy book that Dot. started writing a few years ago. Glowing in the spaces, it invites you to take in the aromas and experience the sensations created by Dot.
According to Dot., “This song is about letting go of your ideas of what other people might think about your work, [to] try and just live in the thing that you’ve created, so for me, that was the fantasy world that I was building.”
Dot. is a multidisciplinary artist who focuses primarily on music. She grew up in a musical environment where her father, who founded India’s first rock magazine, Rock Street Journal, would host metal and rock concerts in the neighbourhood, while soulful classics by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong radiated, leaving a lasting impression. These artists’ names were the initial inspiration for her ventures into making her own songs.
“Indigo” is the assertive comeback of an artist willing to be more than a true-to-herself replica, who soon found herself labelled as a nostalgia-tinged act due to her affinity for those classics from her youth.
She is currently enrolled in her Master’s programme and has a role in the upcoming Bollywood film The Archies, directed by Zoya Akhtar, for which she has also written songs for the soundtrack.
2023 is expected to be the year that Dot. embraces every aspect of her creative nature while remaining true to her inner motives, of course.
