John Giddings, the Isle Of Wight Festival promoter, has reconfirmed that Bowie has no present plans to tour. Speaking to Music Week, Giddings stated, “David is one of the best artists I’ve ever worked with. But every time I see him now, before I even speak to him, he goes, ‘I’m not touring’ and I say ‘I’m not asking”.
Giddings continued, “He has decided to retire and, like Phil Collins, you can’t demand these people go out there again and again. I’m really pleased and proud that the last show he ever did in the UK was the 2004 Isle Of Wight Festival”.
In 2004, touring his “Reality” record, Bowie suffered a medical emergency which seemingly warranted an abrupt end to the singer’s career. This was the case up until 2013, whereby Bowie surprised the world by quietly dropping the excellent The Next Day. The release of this album rekindled the prospects that The Thin White Duke might retake the stage, but two years on this has yet to happen.
