Brooklyn queer R&B/soul singer-songwriter and producer Ben Freeman returns with “Curiosity”, which transports listeners to the golden era of soul.
Produced by the talented Jackson Hoffman, this track is the second offering from a retro-themed EP, recorded in Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s Hoffman’s studio. The duo previously partnered on “Long Distance” earlier this June, which also spotlighted indie artist Nora Rothman. They collaborated again on Rothman’s cover of Meredith Brooks’s “Bxxch” in 2022.
A multi-faceted artist, Freeman effortlessly melds theatre and ritualistic elements into his music, paving the way for introspective lyricism and a harmonious voyage. His 2022 self-produced album, Quiet Fury, was hailed as a representation of introspection, underlined with religious motifs and a hymn-like resonance.
It aimed to converse directly with the listener, sharing the journey of inner realization and liberation. The singer’s 2015 EP, Providence, painted the anguish of heartbreak and growing pains, capturing the poignant transition from college to adulthood.
On “Curiosity”, Freeman delves into the aftermath of a breakup, exploring the pain and yearning that follows. His haunting inquiry, “why don’t you want to know me anymore? Will I ever know you again?” resonates, evoking memories of timeless, soulful ballads.
The song’s refined composition beautifully complements Freeman’s characteristic multi-layered vocals. His previous single, “Long Distance”, was lauded by Necessary Outlet, praising his “vulnerability” and “beautiful instrument“.
As summer beckons, Freeman is set to release a retro-inspired alternative R&B/soul EP that accentuates his hallmark intimacy while venturing into a more pop-centric territory. With the skilled hand of Jackson Hoffman at the helm, fans can anticipate a musical experience filled with Freeman’s signature layered vocals, warm keys, and compelling grooves.
The future certainly seems luminous for this Bay Area-born artist as he continues to touch souls with his profound narratives and melodies. Listen to “Curiosity” below!
