When it seemed like the hype from the monster comeback had finally started to die down, the fire has just been re-ignited. Bruno Mars returns with more heat alongside fellow chart topper Cardi B with the release of his brand new single, a remix of “Finesse” off his double platinum album 24K Magic.
The video, directed by himself and Florent Dechard puts a 90’s twist on the 80’s, New Jack Swing inspired track. Made to pay homage to one of his favourite TV shows growing up In Living Colour, the video is high energy. With Phil Tayag as creative consultant, everything about this video screams 90’s: the outfits, the dancing, the backdrop, even down to the colour grading.
Opting for Cardi B to feature on the track, whose verse is full of flair and attitude, was a brilliant choice. The Bronx rapper has had an exceptional past year with three Top 10 singles on Billboard Hot 100 including her number one smash hit “Bodak Yellow“.
With the Grammys about a month away – Mars being nominated for six awards including Album, Record and Song of the Year – the timing of this release is clearly thoughtful. I’m sure he will be hoping that this may give him the edge to possibly win one of the top three prizes up for grabs.
