Houston-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Bryant Barnes has released his debut EP Vanity led by new single “I’d Rather Pretend“, marking a significant step in his rising career. The EP features seven tracks that blend alternative pop with indie and R&B influences, showcasing Barnes’ versatile musical style and emotional depth.
The lead single, “I’d Rather Pretend,” has quickly gained viral attention, amassing over 17 million views on TikTok and nearing 10 million views on Instagram Reels.
The track features Barnes’ expressive vocals layered over a piano-driven melody, capturing the complexity of mixed emotions as he sings, “I want to love you but I’m scared, so I’d rather pretend.” This viral success has significantly increased his follower count and boosted the streaming numbers of his previous singles.
Other tracks on the EP highlight Barnes’ range and musical influences. “Don’t Let It Be U” features upbeat acoustic guitar and an engaging hook, while “Universe” includes an electric guitar backdrop that explores themes of escapism. The track “Want You All The Time” delivers a groovy bassline and promises of commitment.
Before the EP’s release, Barnes built a strong online presence during the COVID-19 pandemic with viral piano covers of artists like XXXTENTACION and Joji, as well as public performances at airports, which helped him grow an audience of 1.7 million followers on TikTok. This exposure caught the attention of Mercury Records, leading to his signing in 2023.
His previous singles, such as “Give Me A Sign” and “Don’t Want A Love Song,” have received critical acclaim and millions of streams, reinforcing his status as a promising new artist.
