The stunning new song “Jubilee” is the work of the indie atmospheric folk artist Alie Byland, and acclaimed singer/songwriter The Bones of J.R. Jones (Jonathon Linaberry). After performing together on tour in February 2024, their chemistry on stage organically translated into both artists writing together.
Byland lets us know that “‘Jubilee’ had an original spark from my husband Jake and me before taking on new depth when shared with Linaberry.” The three came together in Los Angeles between frantic tour schedules to work on the track.
“Immediately, I felt like the lyrics, ‘What would happen if you put down the weight of the world,’ meant something different to each of us,” Alie says. “It felt like we both realized this could be special.”
They reunited in New York City a few months after recording the song with Nate Yaccino of Byland, guitarist Skyler Mehal of Linaberry and drummer Jeremy Kokler of Linaberry.
This results in a soulful, reflective anthem that captures the poignant balance of shedding burdens and embracing freedom. Byland’s journey has been one of metamorphosis.
Alie, a product of the New Mexico religious community, used her migration to Seattle in 2010 as a trigger to launch her music career with the Desert Days CD in 2018. Back in New Mexico during the epidemic, a wave of contemplative songwriting emerged, culminating in the 2022 album Heavy For A While.
After touring for the majority of 2024, Byland is ready to have a breakout year with “Jubilee” and upcoming shows with Damien Jurado and Deep Sea Diver.
On “Jubilee,” Byland and Linaberry deliver a collaboration as heartfelt as it is inspiring-proof that even the weightiest themes can be transformed into something beautiful.
