Canadian artist Tanika Charles has released a new single titled “Different Morning” featuring DijahSB. It is really the first single from the two-time JUNO Award nominated and Polaris Prize listed songstress’ upcoming third studio album, Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly, which is set for release on April 8 via the Milan-based Record Kicks label.
“Different Morning” sees Tanika collaborating with rising Toronto MC and fellow JUNO Award nominee, DijahSB, whose last album Head Above The Waters was included in Exclaim Magazine’s top 50 albums of the year.
Speaking about the inspiration behind “Different Morning”, Tanika Charles says, “So much of our days are spent dwelling on the same mistakes, the same misfortunes. That thing we wish didn’t happen, or what we wish we hadn’t done. ‘Different Morning’ is about starting a new day without that baggage, about finding a way to correct course and move past it“.
She adds that, “What starts as a pitiful interior monologue evolves into a celebration of getting over that hump by being your biggest cheerleader. DijahSB is someone who was able to carry that triumphant spirit that the second half of the song needed. ‘I’m alive today’ is enough of a blessing, enough of an accomplishment, and enough to be thankful for“.
On the back of the success of her previous albums Soul Run and The Gumption, Tanika had established a comfortable cadence of releasing an album and then hitting the road the next year to bring her music to live audiences all over the world, but because of the global pandemic, she had to go back to the drawing board for this new project.
Tanika enlisted the help of frequent collaborator Robert Bolton and established solo artist Tafari Anthony when making this new album, with artists Khari McClelland and DijahSB, among the guests on the album, while Sean ‘D/SHON’ Henderson and Dakarai Morris-James both collaborated with vocal compositions across many songs on the record.
