After premiering at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Lynne Ramsay‘s You Were Never Really Here is finally getting a release date.
Both written and directed by Ramsay, based on Jonathan Ames‘ novel, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joe, a veteran turned assassin with PTSD who gets hired to bust a senator’s daughter out of a sec-trafficking ring. Phoenix garnered rave reviews, naturally, for his performance, though with a February release date, might just miss out on an Oscar.
On the film’s refreshing noir tone that stands out from cult films Drive and Memento, Ramsay comments “we wanted to get away from that type, and focus on the impotence of masculinity“, describing production as more “punk rock” than typical.
You Were Never Really Here will enjoy a limited release February 23.
