‘Captain Marvel’ Dominates The Box Office On Opening Weekend | Film News

The long awaited Captain Marvel debuted into theatres this weekend and blew up the box office, with $153 million in North America.  Worldwide, the film was a great success, adding another $302 million for a global total $455 million. The film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, is the 21st installment of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and its first film with a solo female lead.

Captain Marvel also holds the fifth-biggest female-led debut weekend of all time, behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($158 million in 2013), Beauty and the Beast ($174m in 2017), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220m in 2017) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248m in 2015).

Oscar-winner Brie Larson features as the titular heroine Captain Marvel, who is also known as Vers, a strong member of the alien Kree special unit known as Starforce. This film is not only about superheroes, but it’s also about women power in the world, as the protagonist is a strong figure who led the action.

Meanwhile, the non-Marvel film, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, was Captain Marvel’s rival this weekend. But it swooped into the second place slot in its third weekend with $14.6 million.
