Chvrches are a band that stick to their guns. If they think that something doesn’t align with their beliefs, they’ll steer away even if it could boost their popularity. “I don’t want to be the front for somebody else’s creativity and sell that day in, day out” stated Lauren Mayberry in a recent interview with The Guardian.
In the same interview, fellow band-member Martin Doherty mused that “we could have sold 200,000 more albums if we’d hidden Iain and I from view and put Lauren on the cover of every magazine. But there’s 100 of those acts and that stuff goes away”. Now that they have fully established themselves as a threesome, they feel more comfortable in situations where Lauren is the focus, like in their latest music video, for example.
This rejection of industry expectations comes as no surprise, Lauren Mayberry is vocal about feminism and even founded a feminist group dubbed ‘TYCI’.
