Amsterdam-based artist Cosmic Crooner has just released his latest single and video, “Mosquito in the Photo Booth,” ahead of his UK tour supporting Mattiel. The track, a follow-up to last month’s “Never Wear Your Own Merch,” showcases a captivating blend of bossa nova influences, and intricate musical arrangements. Fans can catch him live during his tour, with a London show at Rich Mix on December 7.
“Mosquito in the Photo Booth” draws heavily from the golden age of bossa nova, channeling the smooth rhythms and vibrant melodies of artists like Jorge Ben Jor and Chico Buarque. Yet, it also carries the storytelling charm of Serge Gainsbourg and Leonard Cohen, making for a track that’s engaging. The lush vocals blend seamlessly with a xylophone-like instrument that imitates the vocal melody, adding an lovely quality to the song.
The chorus, in particular, has a bossa nova feel, marrying intricate percussion with a smooth and playful swing. The track evokes feelings of nostalgia. The rich percussion, highlighted by the cuica, a percussion drum that originated from Brazil. Stands out and adds a layer of rhythmic depth that complements the track’s intimate storytelling.
In his own words, Cosmic Crooner describes the inspiration behind “Mosquito in the Photo Booth” as an exploration of the question, “What’s the use of an Egg Chair without a home?” His passion for furniture, he explains, led him to craft metaphors that are as rich and unexpected as the track itself. The lyrics invite listeners into a playful, yet introspective world.
Cosmic Crooner is set to take his captivating live show on the road, supporting Mattiel on their UK tour this December. For those in the UK, this tour gives you a chance to hear his latest single “Mosquito in the Photo Booth” along with fan favourites.
