Demna Gvasalia, Vetements’ head designer was appointed as artistic director at luxury fashion house Balenciaga last year, following the departure of Alexander Wang.
Gvasalia has caused a lot of controversy since his emergence in the fashion scene turning heads with his fashion shows in sex clubs and Chinese restaurants and branding the fashion cycle as ‘broken’. The ethos of the designer is very heavily structured around ready-to-wear and he has famously stated: “Fashion shouldn’t make you dream in 2016. It should just be there, for us to wear”.
Balenciaga’s first menswear show is set to take place during Paris Menswear Week on June 22 and will be the first time in its 99-year history. It will certainly be interesting to see how Gvaslia’s rebellious and more masculine vision reflects with Balenciaga’s ultra-feminine, sophisticated reputation.
