Normally Hollywood wait until celebrity personalities are dead before making a biopic about them. Not for Barack Obama it seems, as emerging talent Devon Terrell has been cast in a biopic about the man who would be President.
President Obama seems to be a hot topic in the film industry right now: a film about his courtship of wife Michelle, Southside With You, drew attention at Sundance this year, and this upcoming biopic, casually titled Barry, will chronicle his time as a student in New York.
However, you can throw all you know about student dramas out of the window; this won’t be Barack Obama does Fresh Meat, with the future President participating in kegstands or protesting for the legalisation of recreational drugs. Instead Barry will focus on his studying of political science at Columbia University and his forging of key relationships.
Joining the young Terrell is Anna Taylor-Joy, who is cast in the role of ‘fellow student’. It is unknown who this could be but the fact that Obama had not yet met his future wife makes her part a curious one. On the technical side, Vikram Gandhi has been named as the director and Adam Mansbach has written the script. Filming is due to commence in April.
