LA-based Sudanese-American artist Dua Saleh has released a new single titled “Want,” from their forthcoming debut album I SHOULD CALL THEM. Known for their genre-blending and socially conscious lyrics, Saleh continues to push boundaries in the music scene.
Saleh’s journey began as a refugee from Sudan’s civil war, growing up in the Midwest with a diverse mix of ’40s soul, jazz, ’90s hip-hop, dancehall, afro-beat, and Sudanese music. Their artistic voice was shaped through poetry, influenced by their mother’s Quran readings and later through spoken word performances, academic pursuits, and community activism.
Since 2019, Saleh has released three EPs — NŪR, ROSETTA, and CROSSOVER — praised by The New York Times, NPR, and Pitchfork. Their music blends R&B, electronic, and indie-pop elements with a raw, gritty edge, marked by melody and fearless exploration of personal and social themes.
“Want” showcases Saleh’s introspective music style. The track is part of their album “I SHOULD CALL THEM,” set for release in fall 2024 on Ghostly International. This album represents Saleh’s most vulnerable work, addressing environmental anxieties and personal experiences with hope and resilience.
In addition to their music, Saleh has contributed as a co-writer for Travis Scott’s “UTOPIA” track “MY EYES” and gained recognition for their role in the Netflix series “Sex Education.” They were honored as GAY TIMES’ 2023 Rising Star in Music.
Dua Saleh’s collaborations include Amaarae, Bon Iver, Corbin, Denzel Curry, Duckwrth, Psymun, and Travis Scott. Their music has amassed over 94 million streams, solidifying their place as a rising star in the industry.
“Want” is a testament to Saleh’s evolving artistry. As anticipation builds for I SHOULD CALL THEM, fans can expect a deeply personal and thought-provoking album from this innovative artist.
