Bottega Veneta‘s Autumn/Winter 2024 runway show at Milan Fashion Week was a spectacle on a grand scale, showcasing Matthieu Blazy‘s vision of fashion in motion. Set against a backdrop of tropical cactus lights, the show welcomed a panel of guests including Kate Moss, Raf Simons, Julianne Moore, and A$AP Rocky.
Blazy’s collection was a study in contrasts, with oversized silhouettes dominating the show. Models were wrapped in puffy coats and layers of fabric, while splashes of bright color and intricate textures added depth to the creations. The emphasis on movement was tangible, with clothes swaying and dancing with every step.
But amidst the extravagance, there was also a sense of practicality. Functional outerwear, such as double-breasted blazers and leather jackets, brought structure and balance to whimsical ensembles, ensuring a harmonious coexistence of style and utility.
Speaking about his collection, Blazy referred to the importance of clothing in today’s world. “In a world on fire, there is something very human in the simple act of dressing,” he remarked, underlining the importance of fashion as a form of personal expression.
The show’s scenography further highlighted this theme of rebirth. Inspired by the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, which uses fire to reinforce the durability of wood, the runway resembled an arid landscape, symbolizing strength and adaptability in the face of adversity.
“It is hard to be celebratory at this point. Still, the idea of rebirth is beautiful, too. These are the flowers that bloom after the earth is burnt – they give a sense of hope. They come back stronger than ever. Here, elegance is resilience.” wrote the creative director in the show notes.
