Gareth Edward‘s untitled Star Wars spin-off has acquired some casting news as the Gary Whitta script starts to take form. With production set to get underway this year, its been revealed that Rooney Mara, Tatiana Maslany and Felicity Jones are in the mix for lead roles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the three female starlets are on the ‘want-list’, with Maslany already testing for the role.
Maslany is most well known for her brilliant performance in television series Orphan Black for the past few years, where she takes on multiple roles as a woman who witnesses the suicide of a girl who looks just like her. Another likely lead is Felicity Jones, a British actress who has recently found success with James Marsh‘s Stephen Hawkins biopic The Theory of Everything. With a couple of award nominations already under her belt, this could be a brilliant opportunity to get some Hollywood recognition. Bringing up the rear is The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara. Rooney is well known for tackling big roles within Hollywood, as well as approaching more independent, quirky roles like starring alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Her.
All three actresses are seriously talented and will no doubt take on such a big role with ease and gusto. What’s even more impressive is that, by the looks of it, there will be a great female lead! This can only be a good thing for the new Star Wars spin-off, with Hollywood still desperately seeking strong female roles. Apparently, reading and testing for the film began last December in the UK and has now moved to the USA to further its development.
