The issue of female directors in films has twisted and turned of late, now seemingly slithering in favour of female directors who have seized the limelight at the Cannes Film Festival. Three women directors, including our own Andrea Arnold are in the running to win the prestigious Palme d’Or.
Andrea Arnold’s American Honey is in competition with postwar romance From the Land of the Moon starring Marion Cotillard alongside Toni Erdmann directed by Maren Ade who won a silver bear at the Berlin film festival for Everyone Else in 2009. The film is about a father who tries to restore his daughter’s sense of humour with a series of pranks.
