In a move that has split the fashion world, lawmakers in France have voted in favour of banning underweight models from the runway. The reason behind the decision is in order to cut down on rates of anorexia, which are currently worryingly high amongst young women in the country. By hiring underweight models, designers are at risk of a €75,000 fine and face up to six months in prison. Though it has divided opinions in the world of fashion, with some designers calling the amendment “discriminatory“, the law is expected to come into effect by the end of the year.
