In a fierce bidding war including Fox 2000, eOne, and Lionsgate as contenders, Sony has emerged victorious and now holds the rights to adapt the young adult novel, A Darker Shade Of Magic, which is the first book of Victoria Schwab’s fantasy series.
Gerard Butler will take on production via Butler’s production company G-Base, alongside the company’s Alan Siegel and Danielle Robinson. Schwab and Neal Moritz, who has a first-look deal at Sony, will also produce. Toby Ascher will assume the role of executive producer.
A Darker Shade Of Magic is followed by two other books: A Gathering Of Shadows and A Conjuring Of Light. The trilogy could be ideal for a film franchise, which explains the sudden rush to claim adaptation rights.
A Darker Shade Of Magic follows Kell, a magician with the ability to jump between parallel universes connected by one magical city, and the adventure that he’s pulled into when he meets Delilah Bard, a London pickpocket.
