The first trailer for a new biopic on Harriet Tubman has arrived. Rising Hollywood star, Cynthia Erivo stars in the movie titled HARRIET, with Black Nativity and Eve’s Bayou director, Kasi Lemmons, behind the camera and Gregory Allen Howard as co-writer.
Set in the mid-1800s, this drama is based on the extraordinary life of Harriet, a legendary freedom fighter that escaped from slavery to liberate other slaves using the America’s Underground Railroad.
The 32-year old Cynthia Erivo is known for her 2016 ‘Best Actress in a Musical’ Tony Award for her role as Celie in The Color Purple revival. HARRIET is a challenge for the actress as it is her debut as a leading star. Talented actors such as Leslie Odom Jr. as abolitionist William Still, Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters are also fundamental pieces of this impressive film.
In the trailer, we can see a scene where Odom Jr.’s character says to Harriet “Welcome to the Underground Railroad!“. Janelle Monáe also appears in this first preview as one of Tubman’s mentors, but Erivo is the star of the show throughout this 2-minute long teaser.
If this trailer is anything to go by, when award season comes around, this emotional story of the abolitionist icon will surely be in the spotlight. The hopeful ‘HARRIET’ film will be in US theatres on November 1, but the UK release date is still unknown. Enjoy the trailer below.
