There are many empowering songs around, but eighteen-year-old actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld’s debut single “Love Myself” is slightly more… open. The video for “Love Myself” premiered recently and features Steinfeld dancing on an urban rooftop sporting a leotard that reads ‘SELF SERVICE’. Another recurrent image is of a large mirror on the street which tempts people to appreciate their reflection, which many do.
The chorus screams, “Hey! Gonna love myself / No I don’t need anybody else!”, and a closer listen to the song reveals that it is extremely likely to be about masturbation. She knows “how to satisfy, keeping the tempo right / Without you” and isn’t afraid to scream it from the rooftops, literally. This is a catchy and upbeat summer anthem that tells women it’s okay to indulge in some self-love, physically or otherwise.
