Marvel Studios have recently confirmed as early as April that hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow is no longer in contract with the production company therefore resulting in Paltrow not appearing in Captain America: Civil War as Tony Stark’s love interest Pepper Potts.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s contract with Marvel Studios expired after Iron Man 3 was completed and has not been chosen to be renewed. One of the reasons why such an outcome may have occurred is because Paltrow’s character Pepper Potts lacks significant influence within the marvel cinematic universe.
Gwyneth Paltrow has only featured in only 4 Marvel movies in total and rarely achieves any significant independent screen time within each marvel movie unlike her female counterpart and co star Scarlett Johansson. Pepper Potts as a female character lacks the excitement, energy and sophistication that Black Widow provides on screen.
Black Widow epitomises the underlining characteristics of a female protagonist within a superhero franchise wherelse Pepper Potts is only best utilised in the Marvel movies as Tony Stark’s girlfriend and therefore fails to create the same cinematic impact on screen.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts is a missed opportunity as Marvel Studios have failed to construct a female character that strongly ties in well with the superhero genre. Pepper Potts was unable to break away from the stereotypical “girlfriend” archetype and failed to become a character of her own virtue.
