21-year-old West London artist IVANA has released her debut single, “Ain’t Free.” This song blends neo-soul, pop, and RnB, creating a sophisticated yet catchy sound. “Ain’t Free” talks about understanding your worth in or out of a relationship, with a focus on female empowerment.
IVANA began working on “Ain’t Free” in her bedroom studio in London. “I actually started ‘Ain’t Free’ with its bass line in my bedroom studio and then discovered the main chorus vocal melody,” she says. The song evolved into a message about realizing one’s value, something she personally experienced.
The singer’s background has a rich musical foundation. Born in Bilbao to a Spanish mother and an English father, she grew up in London. Her father, Ben Bartlett, a BAFTA-winning classical composer, taught her piano from a young age. IVANA later taught herself guitar and bass guitar, becoming a skilled multi-instrumentalist and vocalist.
Her love for music began early, influenced by her father’s passion for jazz. She discovered artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Sade, and Marvin Gaye, who have significantly shaped her musical style. More recent inspirations include Snoh Aalegra, Ari Lennox, and Olivia Dean.
The rising artist co-produced “Ain’t Free” with her friend and guitarist, Pete Anderson. The track features live instrumentation from her dedicated band, who have been performing with her at various venues across London. The song was finalized by Felix Davis at Metropolis Studios in West London, making her debut single ready.
With her debut single on RnB/soul playlists, the London-based singer hopes to gain more visibility. She plans to promote “Ain’t Free” through gigs and her growing social media presence. “I hope ‘Ain’t Free’ can reach and inspire other women and people. Or, it’s just for anyone that loves the groove and vibe anyway,” she shares.
IVANA has already made a name for herself in London’s live music scene. The reception at her gigs suggests she is an artist to watch. “Ain’t Free” is just the beginning for this promising singer, with many more memorable songs ready to be released.
