Janelle Monáe just continues to play by her own rules. Last night, whilst the whole internet was still reeling from Beyoncé‘s epic Coachella performance, Monáe released her latest single to come from her forthcoming new album Dirty Computer set for release at the end of the month, the confidence oozing “I Like That“.
“I Like That” follows on from predecessors “Django Jane” & “Make Me Feel” and the most recent in the series, “Pynk“. But this latest cut is not as audacious.
Encapsulated by a trap-like beat and sweet harmonies, it celebrates individuality in the face of contradicting opinions from others. Monáe drops potent gems and she finds a way to switch up the track with slick rap verse, reminiscing back to high school and having to deal with her own self-acceptance.
If her previous music videos serve as any indication, this is set to be Janelle Monáe’s most experimental and most liberating album to date, and we most definitely can’t wait.
Janelle Monáe’s new album Dirty Computer is set for release April 27.
