Michigan’s JMSN is bringing in abundance the stylings of R Kelly and D’Angelo with his latest offering, “Cruel Intentions”. There is sensational instrumentation courtesy of Aaron Provisor (piano, Rhodes, organ), Misha Bigos (Rhodes), Brandon Combs (drums), Yuki “Lin” Hayashi (bass), Alekos Syropoulos (sax) and Eliza James (violin).
It kicks in with bluesy guitar, and when the vocals begin it gets soulful. The horns kick in for climax, joined by some organ. The drums, jazzy, maintain that kicked back feel even in the song’s more passionate moments. There’s a reprisal of the blues guitar, halfway through the song, with additional tinkling on the piano, before the song begins again proper. Then there are beautiful vocal harmonies towards the end, akin to a Michael Jackson moment. Clocking almost six minutes, the song’s a blockbuster.
JMSM’s album It Is is up for pre-order now, whereby you’ll get “Cruel Intentions” straight away. The album is out on Friday, May 6 via White Room Records.
