When I said the Joker was among the most favourite of villains, I didn’t mean for Hollywood to concentrate all its efforts into saturating cinema with the green haired trickster. I jest. The news of the Joker-Harley Quinn spinoff has been known for some time, but now fans – or the many couples who seem to truly think themselves an embodiment of the Suicide Squad pair – can officially get excited.
Jared Leto and Margot Robbie will reprise their roles as the Joker and Harley Quinn, respectively. Crazy, Stupid, Love‘s Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will both pen and direct the so-called “criminal love story“.
It was announced just yesterday that the Joker was getting his own standalone film, albeit not starring Jared Leto, and an entirely different project in its own right. To be directed by The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips, the Warner Bros. project will give an origin story to Gotham City’s madman.
Phillips’ film is to be produced under “a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters”. With Leto and Robbie on board this new psycho-romance project, it’ll fall into DC’s main branch of superhero flicks.
Likely, this project will begin production once the Suicide Squad sequel finishes up, though the follow up to the 2016 film is yet to attach a director. Still, they ought to hurry up before they lose their stars to agreement endings.
