Jonny Greenwood is treating us to his new sound earlier than expected, in a pre-release album stream for Junun which is available right now. Following in the footsteps of some of the greatest rock artists willing to take wonderful risk with world music, his new album incorporates Indian music in an emphatic fashion. In fact, on occasion Greenwood disappears into the background, as he is one of more than 16 musicians taking part.
In partnership with Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur, and produced with Nigel Godrich, Junun was recorded in India this year. It is evident that Greenwood has taken this musical journey very seriously, and appears to have stood out from the crowd when he told the Evening Standard that he’s “always a little wary of rock bands half-heartedly dabbling in world music”.
