How I have just stumbled across this Live version of “Issues”, the recent release from Julia Michaels, is beyond me.
The Californian songwriter dropped the music video for the track last Friday and has since released a live version of the track with Vevo Dscvr. At just 23 years old she has writing credits with some of the pop music’s biggest names including Justin Beiber, Selena Gomez and Fifth Harmony, but she has now broken through with her own material.
The live performance combines effortless and breathy vocals and showcases her huge vocal range as she cartwheels from each note. The continuous plucking and bass throughout drives the track forward and this, combined with a catchy hook, makes it an easy-listening, honest pop ballad.
“Issues” tells the story of turbulence within a relationship, a popular choice of subject for many predictable pop tracks, however, Julia manages to capture a rawness and relatability in the track. Whether its just her distinctive vocals or her flow for writing, I think she has a lot more to give in regards to her own career as an artist. One to watch, for sure!
