Kamaiyah’s “For My Dawg” is dedicated to Cocaine James, who passed away in April after a battle with cancer, and Fred, who was murdered in Oakland last summer.
The track opens with tinkling piano, and the vocals are grave and honest. Synthesiser then lifts it, if even only slightly. It is a hard street anthem, mixed with longing and plenty of emotion.
The Evan Croker-directed video combines footage of the aforementioned James and Fred that Kamaiyah had from before their deaths. It features candlelit scenes of Kamaiyah and the Hyphy Hoochies crew paying dues on the steps of James’ house.
