In Hollywood’s latest installment of twists and turns, Romeo and Juliet is undergoing yet another modern twist with Kaya Scodelario and Josh Hutcherson at the forefront. As if the infamous Baz Luhrmann adaptation with Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t enough, apparently a Hunger Games star is going to make the story revolutionary. Sorry, Shakespeare.
To add insult to injury, Romeo and Juliet are being anglicised, now going by the names of Mary and Ben. In less boring changes, the star crossed lovers are said to be immersed in a world of corporate espionage and high stakes revenge. The title, Die in a Gunfight, is likely a spoiler.
Scodelario (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) of course plays Mary and Hutcherson is Ben. They are joined by Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse) and Helen Hunt (As Good as it Gets).
Collin Schiffli, (The Dark Knight Rises) will direct, with The Ant-Man and the Wasp screenwriters Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari penning the script.
Producer Mark Gordon said in the official announcement “we are delighted to assemble a top tier cast and creative team to bring this vibrant and passionate film to life. Showcasing exhilarating action and timeless emotional themes, Die in a Gunfight will surely resonate with audiences around the world.” Such a timeless story, that this rebranding is necessary.
Production is expected to begin next month in Boston.
