M.I.A. has teamed up with Swedish clothing brand H&M on a new song and music video entitled “Rewear It”. The song and accompanying visual have been created to promote the retailers upcoming ‘World Recycle Week’, which is asking for people to return unwanted clothes to any H&M store in order for them to be recycled.
The video sees the British-Sri Lankan star dance against a backdrop of sky-scrapers constructed from recycled fabric. She spoke to Vogue about using her position as a way of speaking about important world issues, saying “You’re either a conscious musician or you out and out represent the evils of the industry, just glitzing through everything and making money“.
The star is no stranger to being outspoken on political and environmental issues. She recently courted controversy for the refugee-themed video for her single “Borders”, and has been a long-time supporter and confidante of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
It is unknown whether “Rewear It: is planned to be included on M.I.A.’s fifth studio album Matahdatah, which is scheduled to be released later this year.
