Last year, Disney’s Maleficent (starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning) paved the way for a whole new world of live action Disney remakes and raked in a whopping $758 million worldwide. With this year’s Cinderella keeping the trend going (and earning a handsome $532 million) and remakes of Beauty and the Beast, Mulan and The Jungle Book on the way, it’s no surprise Disney is eyeing up a potential sequel for Maleficent.
At the moment, details are sparse, but Deadline reports that Maleficent screenwriter, Linda Woolverton signed a deal to script the sequel. However, it’s also been reported that Angelina Jolie’s original contract made no mention of a sequel, so whether the star will return remains to be seen. Maleficent was a retelling of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and made a number of changes to the storyline and characters so it will be interesting to see where Disney will take the story though, with such a neat ending, is a sequel really necessary? Only time will tell.
