Maxwell has premiered the steamy music video for his fast-rising single, “Lake By The Ocean”. This is the first visual from Maxwell’s much-anticipated new album BlackSUMMERS’night, due out Friday, July 1, his first album in seven years and the second chapter of his musical trilogy that began with 2009’s BLACKsummers’night.
The song is very soulful, heartfelt and sensual. The guitar and piano are earnest, with clapping drums that lock everything in with its slight rattle. The middle section, if you will, is delicate and beautiful vocal harmony, before the instrumentation rises for a crescendo.
In terms of the music video, directed by Phillip Andelman, has a cinematic quality to it, given that the song does not start immediately. It seems to chronicle a woman endeavouring in life, doing things like collecting fresh water. She then spends time unwinding watching Maxwell perform at small venue, whose movements remind one of the late Ray Charles.
