Melbourne-based artist Bronwyn Rose Hicks, known by her stage name Bron, recently unveiled her new single “No Medicine.” Produced in collaboration with Glenn Lavender, a four-time Juno award-winning Canadian producer, the song is a poignant reflection of emotional vulnerability and personal growth.
“No Medicine” is a cinematic pop ballad that seamlessly combines Bron’s ethereal vocals with elements of contemporary folk and chamber pop. Beginning as a tranquil, piano-led piece, the song evolves progressively, culminating in a powerful crescendo marked by percussive swells and intense waves of orchestral sound.
It’s an aural representation of the turbulence that emotions can present, echoing the raw and powerful narrative laid out by Bron’s lyrical prowess.
This single was recorded in the comforting environment of Bron’s home studio, under a fluffy pink and purple blanket—a vivid detail that adds an intimate touch to the creation process. According to Bron, the lyrics served as a cathartic outlet during a turbulent period of her life.
She said, “I needed to really force myself to just slow down, tune in and reconnect with my feelings. Whenever I did slow down, the emotions would well up and become quite overwhelming. I wrote the lyrics as a way of tuning in and resetting my inner world to a place of calm surrender, to just be okay within all the chaos.”
Raised in Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges, surrounded by rainforest and fern gullies, Bron has a deep and palpable connection with nature, which she skilfully translates into her music. Her compositions often evoke a sense of awe akin to that of being amidst the natural world—an aesthetic clearly portrayed in “No Medicine.”
Bron’s background as a versatile instrumentalist and performer has significantly shaped her unique sound. With a history of playing the violin in major orchestras and performing at prestigious venues like Melbourne’s Hamer Hall and the Sydney Opera House, her music naturally leans towards a lush, orchestrated sound.
The collaboration with Glenn Lavender was inspired by the minimalist works of artists such as Philip Glass and Ólafur Arnalds. This partnership has yielded a series of recordings that pair layers of delicate strings with sparse piano arrangements, underscored by Bron’s vocals which tell of a reconnection with her Celtic heritage.
Her lyrics are not just poetic but also deeply personal, reflecting the complexities of navigating adulthood while preserving the innocence and curiosity of one’s inner child. “I would describe myself as an optimist,” Bron shares. “I always turn towards the sunshine, the magic in a moment.”
Bron’s forthcoming cinematic debut EP, titled Drink It In, promises to be a full exploration of this lyrical and sonic journey—a narrative of self-discovery, hope, and wonder that “No Medicine” introduces so evocatively.
As listeners, we are invited into Bron’s intimate emotional landscape through “No Medicine,” a song that not only showcases her impressive musical craftsmanship but also her ability to articulate profound emotional experiences with grace and sincerity. It is a single that sets an encouraging and intriguing precedent for her upcoming EP and future works.
