Television director Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad) is apparently being considered to direct the second Star Wars Anthology movie focusing on fan favorite character Boba Fett. MacLaren was recently set to direct the upcoming Wonder Woman films for Warner Brothers, but was dismissed following creative differences.
According to the Meet The Press podcast, she is on a list of possible directors for the Anthology project including Jon Favreau and Matthew Vaughn. The Anthology films will be released on alternative years to the Star Wars Saga movies. Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens (JJ Abrams) is coming to us at the end of the year and the Star Wars: Rogue One spinoff in 2016. Rogue One (Gareth Edwards) will focus on a group of X-Wing pilots and their plot to steal plans for the Death Star, the follow up will develop the story of Boba Fett and will be released in 2018.
Fantastic 4 director Josh Trank was originally on board to direct the Boba Fett spinoff to the Star Wars franchise but was reportedly let go after one of the films writer/producers Simon Kinberg worked with him on Fantastic 4, and was less than satisfied with the movie. As far as we know so far, Kinberg will work on the screenplay with Star Wars alum Lawrence Kasdan.
If MacLaren lands the job as director, it will be her first opportunity directing a movie. Going from some of the most ground breaking and epic television shows to the most successful Sci-fi movie franchise would be a testament to her talent. We will have to wait and see how much Lucasfilm and Disney believe in her.
