In Mitski‘s latest track, happiness is personified as a visitor, a warm presence who eventually leaves.
At the beginning, a drum-machine beats out a fast tempo whilst Mitski’s slightly distorted voice gently sings. At times throughout the track, the arrangement isn’t consistent, but the song is far from smooth-sailing either.
The introductory lyrics are: “Happy came to visit me, he bought cookies on the way / I poured him tea and he told me it’ll all be okay”, but soon afterwards, Happy slips away with nothing but “cookie wrappers” and “empty cups of tea” in his wake. The child-like tone makes it even more melancholic, but it’s an interesting song to say the least.
